The Canadian winters are long and cold and by March we are longing for the warm sunshine. This is the time of year that many Canadians head south to find out what's taking the warm sunshine so long to get here. The state that we head for is Florida. Many choose to jump on a plane and are there in a matter of hours. Then there are those of us who would rather pile everything in the car so that we can see the countryside. There are many sites and experiences that we would have missed had we traveled by plane.

The one thing that we enjoyed the most was watching the change in the weather as we traveled south. Of course New York State's weather was pretty much the same as what we had left behind. Pennsylvania's weather was a little better. We really didn't notice a big change until we entered Virginia. This was the point that I was starting to get excited about our trip and I knew that even better weather wasn't far away. The Carolina's weather was warmer still, with a mix of rain and sunshine and no snow. Georgia's weather was perfect and we ran into the welcome center at the border to get our shorts on.
We had found the warm sunshine. It had only made it to Georgia.
Finally we arrived in Florida. Sun was shinning, the palm trees swaying in the warm breeze and I could feel myself almost thawed out. By traveling to Florida by car I was able to go from winter in Canada to summer in Florida. They may not call it summer there, but it was summer to me. We would have missed this if we had traveled by plane. We would have flown over it.
Whenever you take a trip you have to figure in the costs of that trip. For us the cost of driving down was much cheaper. The cost of driving down (2004) was around 0.00, which isn't bad and cheaper than flying. Also if we had of flown we would have had to rent a car in Florida, which would have added even more to the cost. Even with today's gas prices I still think it's cheaper to drive. Some may argue that point.
We met a lot of people during our journey. Everybody treated us very well and I found the accents wonderful. I hope they felt the same way about mine. We were able to talk and visit with some of the people and learned a great deal about there way of life. I don't think it would have the same on a plane.
There are many other reasons, but these are the ones that stand out for us. These are the experiences that we would have missed had we traveled by plane. Yes the drive is long and sometimes very boring, but we experienced so much. We have made this trip three times now and we are looking forward to trip number four.
